An invaluable community resource where my families have found excellent services and a caring, dedicated, and insightful staff.
— Dr. Aronson-Ramos

At SMC, we teach social competence resulting in social skills. Social competence refers to social, emotional, cognitive skills and behaviors that children need for successful social adaptation.

We focus on thinking not behavior. Our thinking drives our behavior.  To adapt our behaviors to the social situation we must have social, emotional, and organized thinking. In building a social mind we teach:

Social attention: seeing
Social understanding: thinking
Social interpretation: appropriateness
Social interaction: doing

Our goals plans are customized to your child’s social communication profile compiled from assessments administered by a doctoral level professional.

Our interventions target three areas that comprise Social Communication Competency:

Social Language: use of language in social situations

  • Using language for different purposes

  • Changing language according to the needs of the listener

  • Following rules for conversations and storytelling

Social Cognition (Theory of Mind): understanding another person’s knowledge, beliefs, emotions, and intentions and using that understanding to navigate social situations

  • Emotional competence: emotional understanding, regulation and expression

  • Executive function: attention, self-monitoring, goal directed behavior, organization and planning

Social Interaction: reciprocal response and engagement

  • Joint attention, imitation skills, maintaining interactions, responding to social interactions with others
