BUILD SELF-AWARENESS DIFFERENT SKILL NOTEBOOK

Self-awareness is knowledge and awareness of your own personality or character. Being aware of one’s feelings, strengths/abilities, and challenges/limitations. We want our kids to understand themselves and be able to advocate for their needs.

Skill: The words to describe one’s self!

Strategy: Expand vocabulary that describes their feelings, strength/abilities, and challenges/limitations.

Build: Activities that allow the child to identify, learn and promote self-discovery.

Stories & movies to watch together and teach social and emotional skills:

  • Identify and share your insight on varying social scenarios and expectations. Ask your child how do they interpret the social scenario? What do they see happening?

  • Discuss characters in the story or movie and what character traits does your child identify with. What character traits do you identify with?

  • Teaching and discussing empathy and compassion of characters or lack thereof.

  • Identifying the different perspectives and opinions in the story or movie.

  • What character struggles does your child identify with?

  • What experiences does your child identify with in the movie?

Body and mind awareness lessons : provide information on the inner workings of the mind and body. Connecting emotions to parts of the body where these emotions are felt:

  • Our brains are computers that require sleep and rebooting. When should you reboot? Helping your child understand how the brain controls the body and mind. How are thoughts impact our actions and emotions.

  • Changes in heart rate depending on emotion (you can use a fit-bit to monitor).

  • Discomfort in stomach for nervousness.

  • Fidgeting when wanting to finish task.

  • Positive thoughts impact your emotions and body. How negative thoughts impact your emotions and body.

Identifying one’s strengths and weaknesses to increase self-awareness. Below is strength chain activity found at www.understood.org. A great example of the word’s to describe oneself:

  • Words to identify strengths/abilities.

  • Words to identify limitations.

  • Words to seek assistance with limitations.
